Current R&D
Activities:
The current emphasis of my research involves: water/wastewater monitoring,
assessment and remediation using physicochemical treatment methods
(adsorption, ion-exchange, flocculation, froth flotation, filtration
etc.), Tailoring of activated carbons during activation and reactivation
for the remediation and encapsulation of trace toxic metals and organic
micro-pollutants from water, engineered of alternative environmentally
benign modified cheaper adsorbents/biosorbents with different functional
groups, Reuse of industrial solid wastes and byproducts (fly ash, red mud,
lignite coal, blast furnace slag) for wastewater treatment, Surface
chemistry of activated carbons and/or alternative adsorbents (physical and
chemical properties), Novel routes for the preparation of Magnetic
Activated Carbons (MACs) possessing high surface area, high sorption
capacity and rapid reaction kinetics capable of removing Priority
Pollutants from water, understanding of sorption mechanisms and Modeling
of adsorption systems, Design, optimization and modeling of processes and
products for environmental applications, waste minimization, Acid mine
drainage (AMD) treatment and control, deinking of pulp and paper,
Precipitation and settling processes in Industrial water treatment;
Chemometric analysis, Biomass fast pyrolysis for the development of
Bio-oils (bio fuels) and Bio-carbons, Bio-oils fractionation,
Biorefineries, Development of environmentally friendly wood
preservatives.
We are also interested in
the transfer of basic research into the private
sectors/industries/organizations/NGOs for commercial development to aid
the poor peoples who cannot afford the sophisticated costly water
treatment methods. This research can range from applied to fundamental
basic research.
